There is such a train in the country that takes passengers without taking money, While this might sound like a steal, it is common for the passengers of Bhakra Railway train to enjoy free trips like this for the past 73 years.

This special train runs along the borders of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, where people use it to travel between Nangal and Bhakar. As stated, passengers need not bother to book tickets to board this train.

Bhakra-Nangal railway service started in 1948. The need for a special railway was felt during the construction of Bhakra Nangal Dam, as there was no way to travel between Nangal and Bhakar at that time. Thus, it was decided that a railway track would be built along the route to facilitate the movement of heavy machinery as well as people.

The train was powered by steam locomotives, which were eventually replaced by locomotives imported from the US in 1953. And till date, the unique train runs with its 60 year old locomotives. While the chairs on the train are like colonial-era wooden benches, each coach is one-of-a-kind and was reportedly handcrafted in Karachi.

The train crosses the Shivalik hills, and reaches Nehla station before traveling to Nangal Dam in Punjab. Reports suggest that the train burns around 18 to 20 liters of fuel every hour, yet the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) has opted to keep it free.

BBNM thought of eliminating free rides due to financial issues, they eventually realized that the train represented heritage and tradition, and was much more than just a source of cash.
