In a good news for the passengers as after the aviation sector, Indian Railways has now decided to resume the cooked meal services which were suspended from March 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The announcement comes days after the national transporters decided to stop the operation of 'special trains' for mail and express trains and revert to pre-pandemic ticket prices with immediate effect.

Railway Board said in a letter to Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited (IRCTC), "In view of the normalizing of train services and the relaxation of Covid curbs in restaurants and eateries across the country, it has been decided that cooked meals would be provided again on trains."

It has also been said in the letter that ready to eat meal service will also continue in all trains. Indian Railways is slowly returning to the pre-pandemic scale of services after Novel Coronavius severely disrupted services.

Last week the Ministry of Railways restored services of long distance trains and then started operating short distance passenger services as special trains with "slightly higher fares" to "discourage people from avoidable travel".

As the number of passengers increased amid a slide in Coronavirus cases, there was a demand for refund on pre-Covid ticket prices – ticket prices of special trains and holiday special trains are marginally higher.
