AIIMS Delhi Director Dr Randeep Guleria has issued a fresh warning a day after the Center wrote to the states regarding preparedness against Omicron

Dr Randeep Guleria said that vaccines and covid-appropriate behavior are the only two ways to stop the increasing spread of the new variant of corona. Omicron's first case was reported in India on 2 December. But since then 213 Omicron cases have been reported in India.

Only Two ways to Prevent From Omicron

Dr Guleria said, "Omicron is a more infectious variant. We need to do two things to protect ourselves, first is to get vaccinated and second is to follow COVID-appropriate behaviour." Earlier, Dr Guleria had said that existing vaccines can be modified to protect against Omicron.

He said, "We will have second generation vaccines. This is something that we need to keep in mind. Current vaccines are effective, but with newer variants coming in, their immunity may go down. However, vaccines have been modified." There are also studies going on whether we can have a dual-potential Coronavirus vaccine. Let's say the delta variant and the beta variant are combined into one vaccine. There will be a vaccine."

Most of the patients are recovering in home isolation

Omicron cases reported in India are mostly foreign, which means that either the patients have traveled abroad or they have come in contact with someone who has traveled to another country. All the cases have been mild and no major symptoms have been reported so far. However, while most patients are recovering in home isolation, state governments are admitting Omicron patients to hospitals as there is a possibility of transmission in home isolation.

Center Govt Warns States Govt

Earlier, in its letter to the states and union territories, the Center directed to strengthen the preparations. The center said, "Based on current scientific evidence, VOCs are at least three times more contagious than Omicron delta VOCs. In addition, delta VOCs are still present in different parts of the country. Hence, at the local and district level. Even more foresight, data analysis, dynamic decision making and strict and prompt control actions are needed. Decision at State/UT and District level should be very quick"
