Today, Mumbai witnessed a sharp hike in daily coronavirus cases registering over 20,000 covid cases a span of just 24 hours.

Considering the massive spike since the past two weeks, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar had earlier announced that the maximum city is likely to go into lockdown if and when the daily coronavirus cases breach the 20,000 mark. So, Mumbai may announce a complete lockdown from tonight, says sources.

As to break the chain of infection, Mumbai has already banned large gatherings and also placed restrictions on the number of people who can attend events. 

Mumbai health officials say that although fresh cases of the omicron type have increased, "only 5%" of patients require medical help and most recover rapidly.

Maharashtra COVID Task Force member Dr Shashank Joshi said on Twitter, Expected to cross 20k cases in Mumbai today, stay home if not necessary, wear mask properly and stay connected with your doctor if symptomatic. Be alert be alert be safe, most cases are still mild.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope said on Wednesday that there is no need for 100% lockdown as of now, but stressed on the need to impose restrictions wherever there is crowd.
